The holiday season is here…a time of entertaining, decorating, and stressing out about the way our homes look. It might be useful to think about staging your home for a party similar to staging a home for sale. For example, the staging “rules” keep it simple and less is more are key to a successfully ornamented and functional holiday home.
1. FORM: Try not to add all your holiday decorations, pick a few ornaments that you love and make room for them by removing other items. Simple candles and long-lasting bouquets of greenery and berries can transform a room or a table with little effort or expense.
Easy last minute decorations: Pine cones, white votive candles and small little bouquets (in votive holders) of pine and evergreen…a bag of cranberries from the grocery store can be used on a saucer around a candle, in a small clear glass or jar, or floating in vases of water…
2. FUNCTION: When planning a party, think about traffic flow, space and ease…if you need to remove some furniture to make it easier to move, do it. Think about what people will be eating and where…do you need silverware and tables or are fingers and napkins enough. Leave coffee tables and end tables free for drinks and plates. Are there enough places to sit….
3. EASE: Food that is self service leaves you free to enjoy your party. Set up a few service spots for beverages and food throughout your party area to keep congestion at a minimum. Use real glasses and silverware, but paper napkins and plates for easier dish washing.
Whatever your holiday plans, remember the reason for the season…enjoy what is!
