WENONAH (NOKOMIS EAST): The Wenonah neighborhood is a part of the larger Nokomis East Neighborhood Association. The four neighborhoods of Keewaydin, Minnehaha, Wenonah, and Morris Park are known as Nokomis East, and make up the Southeastern portion of Minneapolis. The word “Minnehaha” is Ojibwe for “laughing waters.” Prior to 1900 this area was inhabited by Native American Indians, and it wasn’t until between the 1920s and 1960s that many of the existing single-family homes were built. This neighborhood is quintessential South Minneapolis. Tree-lined blocks with small houses in a variety of architectural styles are characteristic of this area. The Nokomis East neighborhood is bounded by Cedar Avenue, Crosstown, Hiawatha and Minnehaha Parkway.
NEIGHBORHOOD SHOPS: Lake Nokomis East is home to small corner commercial districts that still exist where the streetcar used to run in the first half of the 20th Century.
SCHOOLS: Your home resides within the Minneapolis Public School District, specifically within the boundaries of the Lake Nokomis Wenonah Elementary K-1, Lake Nokomis Keewaydin Elementary School 2-5, Sanford Middle and Roosevelt High School.
LAKE NOKOMIS: Minneapolis is the City of Lakes, and the Minnehaha neighborhood is less than a mile from the banks of Lake Nokomis. Enjoy beachside dining at Sand Castle, try your hand (or paddle) at Paddlesculpt a “yoga on the paddle board” experience, watch Nokomis turn into the Pond Hockey Tournament Arena with endless games to watch on the frozen lake. Walk, bike or skate your Lake Nokomis!
RESTAURANTS: Nokomis East is home to several noteworthy eating establishments, easily accessible by foot or bike. Try a coffee at Nokomis Beach Coffee. Enjoy Sandcastle on the shores of Lake Nokomis. Check out the bowling lanes, legendary brews and tasty treats at Town Hall Lanes. And all of this right in your own backyard!
MINNEHAHA CREEK & FALLS: Minnehaha Creek meanders its way across the Northern border of Nokomis East, and is banked by ample green space and park benches for its neighbors to enjoy the serenity of its sights and sounds. Connected to the Chain of Lakes and Minnehaha Falls by bike and pedestrian paths, this is yet another attraction to enjoy right in your own neighborhood.
