One of my biggest pet peeves in home finishing is the over the top matching that goes on…too much exact matching is boring and can feel suffocating…let me out!! So here is my solution. Think complement instead of match. Often times contrast goes together better than same. Mix up your styles, eras, textures, and hues to create an over all feeling of harmony. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, vary one style element and hold others constant. For example, I could vary textures in a room of nearly monochromatic, same-style furniture. In this case, the texture differences will really contrast because there are no other distractions. Remember to use this rule with common sense. If it works it works, if it doesn’t work, break the rule.
